Protein requirements - Work / Training
Training or work requires the same energy-to-protein ratio as maintenance (i.e. 5.2 grams digestible protein per MJ energy). The increases in energy intake required during work therefore increases the protein requirement proportionately. For heavily exercised horses, protein allowances are more likely to become too high rather than too low. A notable exception is when increased energy demands are met through the provision of fats or vegetable oils, which provide energy but not protein.
