Change of energy calculation system
The consultant version of PC-Horse allows you to calculate energy requirements both according to the French-Dutch system (EURO), and according to the North-American system (NRC2007). The two systems use different approaches, both when calculating energy requirements for different horse activities, and when transferring the results of a feed analysis into the
energy concentration of a feed.
Due to the different approaches taken, a ration giving 100% energy coverage in the EURO system will not give 100% energy coverage when the NRC2007 system is used. In PC-Horse we adjust the energy concentrations of the feeds when moving between the two systems. A maintenance ration will provide energy coverage within 2-3% accuracy when you change from both from NRC2007 to EURO calculation and the other way around.
Please note, however, that rations for horses in training may differ by 5-15% or more in energy coverage, and trained horses should have their rations checked under the new system. When you change calculation system, the energy concentrations of all feeds in feed lists, stables and horses will be recalculated. Your “Guaranty feed list” (UK Feed list) will however not be changed.
You can move freely between energy calculation systems. Please note that protein requirement in the EURO system is expressed in grams of digestible protein, while NRC2007 uses crude protein. Relevant screens in PC-horse (Feed list screens, horse screens) will show the energy calculation method used.
